The Great Race
The Planetary race, a land race where many race-drones compete around the equatorial and meridian circumfrence of a small planet for 4 laps, is the most popular spectacle of the 28th century. Many people, both strange and conforming, both rich and poor, and both dignified and undignified watch the seasonal races for entertainment and gambling alike. People gamble on their chosen drone for money, homes, slaves, and even their lives, in exchange for something equally valuable, of course.
But this galactic season, designated as the "fall season" despite the fact that the many planets within colonized space were on many of their own independent seasonal schedules, was the most perilous race the drones would see. It was a race on a small planet about one half the size of the long dead planet, Earth, and riddled with many harsh wastelands of sand dunes, snowy deserts, and various forms of rocky terrain.
